“Three teens who were on a 69-name hit list posted on Facebook have been killed in the past 10 days in a southwestern Colombian town, officials say. Police say they do not know who posted the list or why the names are on it…

The hit list on Facebook, which was posted August 17, gave the people named three days to leave the town of Puerto Asis or be executed, said Volmar Perez Ortiz, a federal official whose title is defender of the public.”

This will definitely spark the conversation of where the authorities responsibility involving Facebook should lie. In other places in the world, authorities have clearly taken to Facebook for help when they need it.

During Jimmy Kimmel’s live show, Justin Long took his iPhone out to share an interesting SMS conversation that he has had, in the process showing Cydia on his iPhone’s homescreen. For those of you who don’t know, Justin Long is the guy who starred in Apple’s widely popular and successful “Get a Mac” series of commercials which aired between year 2006 to 2009.

Now that he is no longer in contract with Apple, he wasn’t afraid to break rules of his former employer. After all, jailbreaking is now fully legal in the United States isn’t it? Skip to 7:04 in the video below to see Cydia present on his iPhone.

Walking through The Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal’s Islands of Adventure, it’s not hard to let the experience overwhelm your common sense. In fact, if it weren’t for the roller coaster hardware, it would be easy to lose yourself and forget that you’re not walking the actual streets of Hogsmeade. Well, okay: the throngs of people and the dichotomy of the beastly hot weather of Orlando and the “snow” on the town’s roofs also help keep you grounded in reality.

I confess: I’m a bit of a Harry Potter fanboy. I ordered the first book from a store in the UK when its popularity first started to become a phenomenon, but it hadn’t yet been published on the western side of the Atlantic. Since my kids are nine and nearly-eight, that means I’ve been a Harry Potter fan for longer than I’ve been a dad. I don’t think of the seven books as great works of literature — I acknowledge the validity of many of the criticisms that have been leveled at the series — but it cannot be denied that there is something there that captivates people. The wildly successful movie series has, whatever its faults, immersed Potter fans in J.K. Rowling’s world to the point where any theme park would have to be meticulously crafted to meet their (our) expectations.

All of that, then, makes it all the more remarkable that The Wizarding World of Harry Potter pulls off the feat. Every detail is finely crafted to enhance the experience, with the unfortunate but (I suppose) necessary exception of being unable to pay for Butterbeers and souvenirs with knuts, sickles and galleons. According to my family’s tour guide, Rowling had approval over absolutely every aspect of the attraction, and it shows, perhaps most in the things visitors aren’t allowed to touch: the marvelous displays in the shop windows, the upstairs “rooms” at the Three Broomsticks and Dervish & Banges, and, of course, the rides.

Ah, yes, the rides, about which much has been written. The “family” ride, Flight of the Hippogriff, is fun enough even if very short (yet fast enough to lose me my clip-on sunglasses). The Dragon Challenge, the most thrilling of the thrill rides, is good only for those with strong constitutions — I discovered to my distress that it is certainly not for me, as I felt every one of my thirty-seven years catching up with me after finishing it (my wife didn’t want to go, and my kids were too short to go on the ride).

But of course the Hogwarts ride, called “Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey,” is the centerpiece of the attraction, and I must say it is very well done. The story is that muggles (meaning you, of course) are being allowed into the school for the first time, and so before the ride you’re brought through several rooms in the castle, spoken about by paintings of the four founders of the school, and allowed to meet Dumbledore, Harry, Ron and Hermione, sort of. The projections of the characters are less well-done than they might be, but if you can’t suspend your disbelief a millimeter further than you already have by that point in order to invest in them, you shouldn’t go. The ride itself is a bit jerky, but is the only way to see into parts of Hogwarts (and its grounds) you otherwise can’t. Not far from Hogwarts is a sort of stage area where a chorus of “students” and large “frogs” sing the Macbeth-derived song from the Prisoner of Azkaban movie and various a cappella tunes, and actors dressed exactly as the Durmstrang and Beauxbatons students from Goblet of Fire perform acrobatics.

Ah, you may say, but what about the wand ceremony at Ollivander’s? Now, I must tell you that my family was treated to a V.I.P. tour by the folks at Universal, which means that we were able to bypass lines all over. It also means they arranged for a special private wand ceremony for my kids, with the “wand keeper” knowing their names and everything. I won’t spoil the experience for you by describing its details, but suffice it to say that I, a devout skeptic and realist, was so taken by my kids’ experience unfolding in front of me that I completely forgot to record it on my iPhone. My wife had actual tears in her eyes at at the end of it, and I do believe my kids for a moment believed that something genuinely magical had happened. We bought the wands that had “chosen” them, of course — despite the $30 price on each, it seemed almost impossible not to after that.

The merchandise is wonderful if (of course) expensive. Items for sale there include quaffles and bludgers, chocolate frogs, remembralls, sneakoscopes and shirts with all manner of designs — and that’s just scratching the surface. If you’re anything like me, you’ll want to buy a whole lot more than your budget will allow. The Three Broomsticks’ food is good, and not nearly as overpriced as I expected. And the famous Butterbeers are quite tasty if very sweet (they seem to be nothing more than cream soda with a bit of butter added), and I can say unequivocally that the frozen version is very refreshing on a hot, humid Florida day.

I can’t promise that every Harry Potter fan will enjoy going, of course: the lines were very, very long, and Florida weather can be a bit temperamental. But it is as magical an experience as I’ve had in longer than I can recall: I really felt like I was in the world of the books and movies, and I know my kids would gladly have spent our entire vacation there.

My advice: Go. Go early in the day, or during the school year on a weekday, to try to avoid long lines. Make sure you go back at night, because the beautiful buildings are yet more beautiful lit up in the dark. And if you can in any way afford a V.I.P. tour, get one, and not just for the Potter attraction (ask if Katrina is available: she’s great!). I wouldn’t take a kid younger than six, just because of the waiting (and likely inability to go on most of the rides).

My only criticism is that it’s too small. You can visit Hogsmeade and parts of Hogwarts, but what about Diagon Alley? The Burrow? And the rest of Hogwarts? I’d like to see an entire park devoted to the world of Harry Potter — one where I didn’t have to walk through Jurassic Park or Seuss Landing (which is also awesome in its own way, but of course vastly different) to get there or leave.

In 1991, coffee-drinking seemed to be on its way out in the United States. From a peak consumption of 3.2 cups per day per person on average in 1962, coffee consumption was down to measly 1.75 cups. There were good reasons for this: Nobody liked the cheap, nasty sludge generally available and the entire experience reeked of Grandma.

Enter advertising giant Ogilvy and Mather, working for Maxwell House.

Their suggestion: Segment the product by quality, value and personal image—ideas that all ended up leading to the thriving coffee market of today. Just when we thought we were out, they sucked us back in. (Meanwhile, the parallel rise of coffee and decline of tobacco could be a sociology thesis, in and of itself.)

That little insight is part of a three-part series on the anthropology of coffee on the blog Anthropology in Practice. Many amazing things dropped at SDCC this year, and we’re still sifting through the piles of awesome to see what we missed as we watched the flurry of tweets. And one thing that has totally floored us a couple days later is this trailer for the upcoming “DC Universe Online” MMO. We heard the reports about cool voice casting being involved, but if this trailer is any indication of the tone and action that the game will carry, then count us in. Watch this, and then we dare you to disagree (which of course some of you will likely do, but that won’t dampen our excitement!).

The United States government today has announced that jailbreaking and unlocking iPhones, rooting of Android phones and ripping DVDs (for educational purposes) is completely legal as long as they are not violating copyright law. Jailbreaking and Unlocking of iPhones has never been illegal, it was just that Apple had strict policies right from the start which prohibited users from installing apps on their device which were not approved by Apple, along with locking the phone so that it can be used on one carrier only.

So in case you previously had any doubts about getting into legal trouble for jailbreaking or unlocking your phone so that you can run it on multiple carriers, you don’t have to because as of today, it is officially legal in United States to run unauthorized apps, along with unlocking the cell phone to use it on any carrier you like.

Full details of this new DMCA legislation are as follows:

Section 1201(a)(1) of the copyright law requires that every three years I am to determine whether there are any classes of works that will be subject to exemptions from the statute’s prohibition against circumvention of technology that effectively controls access to a copyrighted work.  I make that determination at the conclusion of a rulemaking proceeding conducted by the Register of Copyrights, who makes a recommendation to me.  Based on that proceeding and the Register’s recommendation, I am to determine whether the prohibition on circumvention of technological measures that control access to copyrighted works is causing or is likely to cause adverse effects on the ability of users of any particular classes of copyrighted works to make noninfringing uses of those works. The classes of works that I designated in the previous proceeding expire at the end of the current proceeding unless proponents of a class prove their case once again.

This is the fourth time that I have made such a determination. Today I have designated six classes of works. Persons who circumvent access controls in order to engage in noninfringing uses of works in these six classes will not be subject to the statutory prohibition against circumvention.

As I have noted at the conclusion of past proceedings, it is important to understand the purposes of this rulemaking, as stated in the law, and the role I have in it. This is not a broad evaluation of the successes or failures of the DMCA. The purpose of the proceeding is to determine whether current technologies that control access to copyrighted works are diminishing the ability of individuals to use works in lawful, noninfringing ways. The DMCA does not forbid the act of circumventing copy controls, and therefore this rulemaking proceeding is not about technologies that control copying. Nor is this rulemaking about the ability to make or distribute products or services used for purposes of circumventing access controls, which are governed by a different part of section 1201.

In this rulemaking, the Register of Copyrights received 19 initial submissions proposing 25 classes of works, many of them duplicative in subject matter, which the Register organized into 11 groups and published in a notice of proposed rulemaking seeking comments on the proposed classes.  Fifty-six comments were submitted.  Thirty-seven witnesses appeared during the four days of public hearings in Washington and in Palo Alto, California. Transcripts of the hearings, copies of all of the comments, and copies of other information received by the Register have been posted on the Copyright Office’s website.

The six classes of works are:

(1)  Motion pictures on DVDs that are lawfully made and acquired and that are protected by the Content Scrambling System when circumvention is accomplished solely in order to accomplish the incorporation of short portions of motion pictures into new works for the purpose of criticism or comment, and where the person engaging in circumvention believes and has reasonable grounds for believing that circumvention is necessary to fulfill the purpose of the use in the following instances:

(i) Educational uses by college and university professors and by college and university film and media studies students;

(ii) Documentary filmmaking;
(iii) Noncommercial videos

(2) Computer programs that enable wireless telephone handsets to execute software applications, where circumvention is accomplished for the sole purpose of enabling interoperability of such applications, when they have been lawfully obtained, with computer programs on the telephone handset.

(3) Computer programs, in the form of firmware or software, that enable used wireless telephone handsets to connect to a wireless telecommunications network, when circumvention is initiated by the owner of the copy of the computer program solely in order to connect to a wireless telecommunications network and access to the network is authorized by the operator of the network.

(4) Video games accessible on personal computers and protected by technological protection measures that control access to lawfully obtained works, when circumvention is accomplished solely for the purpose of good faith testing for, investigating, or correcting security flaws or vulnerabilities, if:

(i) The information derived from the security testing is used primarily to promote the security of the owner or operator of a computer, computer system, or computer network; and
(ii) The information derived from the security testing is used or maintained in a manner that does not facilitate copyright infringement or a violation of applicable law.

(5) Computer programs protected by dongles that prevent access due to malfunction or damage and which are obsolete.  A dongle shall be considered obsolete if it is no longer manufactured or if a replacement or repair is no longer reasonably available in the commercial marketplace; and

(6) Literary works distributed in ebook format when all existing ebook editions of the work (including digital text editions made available by authorized entities) contain access controls that prevent the enabling either of the book’s read-aloud function or of screen readers that render the text into a specialized format.

All of these classes of works find their origins in classes that I designated at the conclusion of the previous rulemaking proceeding, but some of the classes have changed due to differences in the facts and arguments presented in the current proceeding.  For example, in the previous proceeding I designated a class that enable film and media studies professors to engage in the noninfringing activity of making compilations of film clips for classroom instruction.  In the current proceeding, the record supported an expansion of that class to enable the incorporation of short portions of motion pictures into documentary films and noncommercial videos for the purpose of criticism or comment, when the person engaging in circumvention reasonably believes that it is necessary to fulfill that purpose.  I agree with the Register that the record demonstrates that it is sometimes necessary to circumvent access controls on DVDs in order to make these kinds of fair uses of short portions of motion pictures.

Oh man, The creators of the Batpod bike are selling a working version of the Light Cycle from Disney’s new Tron movie on Ebay!

As announced yesterday by DC Comics, Wonder Woman is getting a new look and — at least for a while — a new origin:

The New York Times has an article about the history of the character and her costume and why the changes were made. They’re the brainchild of J. Michael Straczynski, best known for Babylon 5. Straczynski recently signed an exclusive contract with DC  after years of writing Spider-Man and Thor for Marvel, and he’ll be writing Superman as well as Wonder Woman.  He gave an in-depth interview about the changes to the Amazon to ComicBookResources.com.

There’s something nothing inherently wrong with the new costume, though it doesn’t “wow” me. I’ve enjoyed most of Straczynski’s work in television and comics. And from the interview, it’s unclear how long the revamped origin will last, given there’s an alternate history involved.

But as I wrote last year, I was really enjoying Gail Simone’s run on the book. I was looking forward to more of her stores.

So I’m ambivalent.

Thoughts? Does Wonder Woman need a new design and new origin for this century to appeal to a wider audience?

Or does the iconic version already work?

Apparently, this is how they advertise tire companies overseas.
